Remote Admin for Partner Mail VS R5? 1

Is it possible to remotely administer a Partner Mail VS R5 system? I know that remote admin is supported on Partner ACS R3, (and R4), but there seems to be no VMS admin support!

Thanks Matt .... what I was hoping for was some way of remotely backing-up the configuration of the VMS, rather than just being able to change the existing setup

You can back up the configuration of an R5 on the hard drive of the R5 itself, with the "backup/restore/reports" option of the programming menu in the Administrator's mailbox.

You can dump a hardcopy of the configuration to a local PC connected to the serial port through the same option.

There is no remote PC connection available.

The new Partner Messaging R1 has a local serial port, a remote modem, and a local LAN port available for on site and remote programming.

Does anyone have the wiring details for the cable to connect the serial port to a PC? I seem to remember reading that the link used XON/XOFF handshake, which implies that the link just needs TXD, RXD and GND connecting?

From some digging around that I've done, it appears that Lucent sell an RJ45 to DB25 module (355A??) which contains circuitry, rather than just being a simple conversion between connector types. Can anyone confirm this?

I know that is correct for Legend/Magix so it is probably the same for Partner. I have the adapter your talking about. In this case you use a straight-thru to the 355AF. On my particular one I then went straight into a DB25 to DB9 male connector into a double female DB9 to the COM port. But, like I said, I used this on a Legend. Hope that could be of any help! I've very successfully used a serial SmartCable for connecting telecom equipment. Site is

This is a cable interface with an additional idiot-proof translation box in-line that makes the necessary conductor connections between ends.

With their "Road Warrior" kit, you can tackle almost any configuration with confidence. About a hundred bucks, as I recollect. If time is money (usually it is that way) then this amount is a trivial cost.
