We have five sales employees who need remote access to our Windows NT 4.0 server via a dedicated modem line. Two are running Windows 98 on their laptop and the rest have Windows NT workstation. Can anyone offer the best solution to this situation ?

Is RAS the best solution ?

Will one modem serve the purpose ?

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

RAS is a good solution, but one modem will only allow one user to remotely login at a time. If your sales people travel, you may want to look at a VPN solution such as Microsoft's PPTP. With which you could setup RRAS on your NT server and create 5 VPN ports for each sales person. Then with a public IP address to your RAS server, they could dial into any ISP and have a secure connection to logon to your Domain. This is all done via the Internet using a VPN connection. I've installed it for one client and everythings been working great for several months now.

Goto <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> for more information on PPTP
