With the 7100MAP being discontinued, I'm looking for a device to replace it for remote access to the maintenance console port of the 3300 controller. I find having access to this is very handy for doing triage on down systems and helping my field techs figure out what's wrong with the box. I need something that I can password-protect and access via IP(Telnet) or a dial-up modem. In other words, I want to telnet or dial up to the box, have it ask me for a password, then give me a serial connection to the Maintenance port on the front of the 3300ICP controller. Anyone got suggestions?

I'm curious on this one. Was told by tech support last year that I should never leave a serial cable connected to an in service 3300. I had a conroller at a Co-Lo in another state with serial cable connected to spare server. A couple of days after installation, the server went down and I was told the serial connection caused it.

I'm not aware of any actual technical issue other than the security risk since that port is not password protected, which is why I'm looking for a device that requires one.

The console port can be accessed quite simply via PuTTy.

Password protect a Terminal Session and access via Putty using Telnet/Raw/port 2002

I normally use puTTY, but I like having the console connection available for those occasions when I can't access the thing over IP, like when some knucklehead unplugs the patch cable to the data switch, or a DSP fails, or the HDD takes a dump. It doesn't happen often, but it really helps to be able to send a tech out knowing exactly what he needs to do to restore service instead of trying to talk him through deciphering the console output locally (via a cell phone in a room where you can't get decent reception, if any at all). I've got nearly 600 sites, and I use the 7100's to get into a console at least a couple of times a month. Since I can't get 7100's any more, I need something else to do the same job.

That's a classic , I'm gonna give you a star kwbmitel , not for your help but for this link

I dont know how many times i have been asked something in the office and have just done a 2 second google search to find the answer.

is gonna be emailed to my collegues like crazy :)

If I never did anything I'd never done before , I'd never do anything.....

At one time I recall an issue where a system would not come up if a serial cable left on the maintenance port. That was long ago so I would hope it has been fixed.

As other state you can telnet in. You could also leave a PC connected and remote in to it I suppose.

Mitel has switched to a much more costly Martello product for their remote maintenance. It thnk its more costly because it does a lot more. The only question is "is it worth it". I find customers using the 7100 balk at the price but new customers like the advanced features. Yearly licensing costs as well.

Kind of a neat product acutally being able to allow remote access, collect info for VQM reports and give the customer a portal for access to the above.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

is it not more of an electrical 'earth' thing? Ive heard of earth loop issues being created by connection of a bad cable (or bad port for that matter) not on the 3300 mind but rs232 is rs232.
