How can I release a lease to a DHCP on the fly, that is, without rebooting.
CraigL@bc-corp.com

Hi,

That will only release the ip address until the computer next logs on, assuming it is still in its lease period.

If you need to release the IP address from the PC that it is bound to. It needs to be on the DHCP server.

You will need to go to DHCP Manager.

Select Scope from the menu, active leases, this will show a list of ip addressed currently active. You will then be able highlight the address you want to release, and the click (i think its delete) i dont have access to the screen at the moment, that should it..!!

Paul, I don't believe DHCP manager shipped with Win98SE. But thanks for the thought. CraigL@bc-corp.com

Index,

OK, then guess I should have said you will need to do that on the NT server that is responsible for DHCP allocation.

Its in the Admin Tools Common menu.

Index,

Did you get this fixed? Just in case. . . .

To release at DOS prompt:
ipconfig /release_all

To renew at DOS prompt:
ipconfig /renew_all

No reboot required.

Good luck and Hope this helps!

You're right, even if you do a release/renew the pc will still grab that same IP address the next time it logs in (if it's still in the same lease period). Sorry, read the post too quickly I guess...

Pinkman,

Wouldn't that just grab the same IP address, if it id still in the lease period??

Surely this is something that need to be done in the DHCP manager on the server

Sorry that I didn't clarify my situation. This is a pure Win98SE network. If I can't release the leases without DHCP Manager, then would it be possible to change the lease periods under win98?

Index,

OK, then what is giving out all the ip addresses for the Win98 network??

Has each workstation been giving a static IP address?? Or is one machine controlling the allocation of ip addresses.

If there is no DHCP server, the winipcfg /release_all should work..

It may help if you could say why you need to release an address on the fly.

Chreers.

Paul

Ref DHCP

Windows 98se will only act as a dhcp server if you are runing internet connection sharing.

If you want to change the laese period it is done via the registry checkout microsoft knolage base for full fix

timdodgson is correct.
The Network that Index was refering to is mine.
I run a Win98se box as a server. The dhcp server runs from It. I wanted a quick way to release the leases without rebooting the system. Nt has the DHCP manager and I was looking for something like that for win98se. I can't find any info on lease periods for Win98se on the Microsoft site.
Thanks for all your help and special thanks to Index for posting the question for me..
