I'm trying to preform a "Release Renew" on my pc to get my cable modem to work. I go to start, run, type in winipcfg, and hit release, it works, then when I click on Renew, the "IP Configuration" box always freezes up. I was told that it has something to do with my Windows 98 but I don't know what to do in order to fix it. Can anyone please help me?

Common occurance when it camn't find a connection.

Give it time.

Hello, bobbster2000.

Create or replace the registry entry IPAutoConfigurationEnabled and give it a value of 0 (REG_DWORD). But, before you merge the below .reg file or do it by hand, inspect all the same the registry and see what, if exists, the setting is at present and mark it down. In case the below does not correct the problem, you can reverse back to the present setting to start anew the troubleshoot.

;----below this line----
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCP]
"IPAutoConfigurationEnabled"=dword:00000000

Sounds like the configuration is incorrect. Did your broadband ISP walk you through setting up WINS & DNS settings under TCP/IP? I would double-check those settings first.

If all else fails, try reinstalling the drivers for your ethernet card:

Find the documentation and drivers for your ethernet card (NIC). Remove it from device manager under network adapters (Start->Settings->Control Panel->System) and reboot. Then reinstall the drivers when Win98 prompts you with the "new hardware found" wizard. Make sure the TCP/IP protocol for your network adapter is configured properly.

Correction /tsuji

I should not have missed out the starting lines for the .reg I posted above. So I repost it here the amendment to put the record straight.

;----below this line----
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCP]
"IPAutoConfigurationEnabled"=dword:00000000

bobbster2000,

You haven't been able to connect in a week?

The IP Configuration box has been freezing up for over a week reghakr

But are you able to connect?

Are you losing the connection?

Why are you clicking renew?
