I have a home Nortel BCM 5.0 strictly for a hobby at my house and of course to make and receive phone calls. I personally do not like the clicks and pops of analog trunks when you answer and hang up. I also do not like the delayed CO trunk that doesn't disconnect immediately because of CO features and the delayed caller ID of Analog trunks. A PRI or BRI is ridiculously expensive for an 800 square foot Chicago loft, so I looked into SIP trunking since I have upgraded my system to a 5.0. This is all for fun for me, I LOVE working with Nortel equipment, yes I am a geek, but I am sure I am not alone!

My system is configured with a BCM50 5.0, BSR222 Router, 2 Analog trunks (1 AT&T/Ameritech POTS line, and 1 Vonage VOIP line, and 2 DID SIP trunks from Nexvortex.com, 1 Nortel BES50, and 5 IP phones (3 1140E's and 2 i2004), and 2 digital phones T7316.

Problem, I cannot access the SIP trunking from the IP phones but I CAN access them from the digital T series sets. I've set up a SIP trunk routing code of 9 to reach an outside line and I can make and receive calls on the digital sets via the SIP trunking with no problem. AGAIN, I HAVE NO PROBLEM MAKING SIP TRUNK CALLS ON THE DIGITAL PHONES.

The problem is that I have these expensive beautiful 1140/i2004 IP phones, which are IP based, but cannot access the IP trunks, it seems so backwards. Some people have suggested that I should just use the digital phones and get rid of the IP phones, but I just won't accept that as an answer. If Avaya wants to stay competitive in this market, they should make the BSR222 router be compatible with their own 1100E series telephones and the wave of the future SIP trunking!!!!!

Also, when I call into an 1140 E phone via the SIP trunks, the line connects and immediately disconnects. Apparently my system keeps sending out a "reinvite" message to the VOIP providers server. If I park a call from the digital phones on the SIP trunk and I pick it up on an 1140E phone the line immediately disconnects. Strangely enough, when I pick up the parked call on the i2004 I get one way conversation on the receiving end, but not on the i2004 handset. I can send the same call to the other digital phone and it works fine.

Another really strange thing, VERY STRANGE, is that I have 2 DID's on the SIP trunks. So say I make a call on a T7316 to another T7316 via the SIP trunks, the BCM answers this call as an internal intercom call, even though it's external. Call Pilot answers the call as though it's coming from within the intercom system and not an Outside call as well. I get one way conversation or partial 2 way faded conversation

I've discussed this with someone at Avaya and they told me I just need to wait until Release 6.0 and just use my digital sets until then. This seems like an easy answer, but I assume maybe some of you have figured this out.

My goal is to eliminate the POTS analog trunks totally, and use the Nexvortex.com SIP trunking for my outgoing trunks on my system. (I will still keep the "Ma Bell" analog trunk with a stripped down line for $15 bucks a month for emergency purposes) Is that so hard to ask? I want the crispness of full packet switched technology and Non analog technology. Apparently my request is something that even the manufacturer is having a hard time answering.

THIS IS FRUSTRATING AND ANNOYING, but kind of fun actually. Hopefully someone can help! :)

Sincerely,

Joe

Hey RLSbutton... I'm not sure why I am doing 5. I was told I could do SIP trunks with 5. Ah well... I'll give it a try. I have a good buddy that has been helping me with routers. I can share him. I have a Cisco 871 that I got on ebay for 100 bucks. It works great. I also have several cisco 831's all set up with vpn's back home. That way when I go on vacation, I can take my home phone anywhere I go. What's fun is I can even answer the front door from Florida.!

Hey Leftbase2009,

Well I bought 5.0 because I was told that it would operate SIP trunks with digital and IP phones with no issues. I was told the system would access the SIP trunks similar to a PRI/BRI configuration, and the type of phone you have on the system wouldn't matter because the BCM would translate the information internally between the Digital/IP phones automatically. Well as I described above, it doesn't work. It's due to some issues with the SIP/BSR222/IP Phones/BCM not working properly. If you need to install 5.0 to get to 6.0, I'd highly recommend it. Many of the new features of 5.0 are great.

The crazy thing is....Why would a IP phone not work with SIP trunks and work with Analog trunks? It seems so backwards and is frustrating me. For now I can keep using the analog trunks, but apparently 6.0 is supposed to fix this, but I had to find this out from a guy I know that works directly in a lab for Avaya.

What I don't know is if I will be able to just install the new 6.0 software and the IP phones/BCM will automatically configure and be able to access the SIP trunks (as the digital phones currently do) or I will have to go through hours of meticulous guessing games and IP addresses as how to program the BSR222 Nortel router to work???? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. For some reason, I think someone who is an expert at the networking and port forwarding would be able to figure this out in 5 minutes if they logged in and looked at my system. If I don't get any help, I guess I will have to just wait for 6.0 :(

Interesting enough, I've had countless companies, from Digitel to Black Box to AT&T research this problem for me and no one could find an answer. Finally the Avaya guy I know was able to help me with an answer, but we still couldn't get the router to work.

One thing that irks me is that with 6.0, you still only have the 4 ring tones from the original Norstar systems....why can't Avaya upload the 4 CS1K ring tones or even more rings tones, bascially, every ring tone Nortel has created over the past 20 years and let you have numerous ring tone choices? Or hey, why can't you download wav files for ringers, as you can on any Cisco system of any size! Cisco has over 25 ring tones on every Call Manager phone default. The Call Buzz Announce prompt would be nice too for incoming calls while you are on the phone. Oh well, no one at Avaya listens to my comments, they tell me to go through the Channel Partners, they just think I am crazy I am sure!

Let me know what you think!

Answers for Friedo, I copied your questions and answered each one next to your questions.

Does the BCM have a public IP address assigned to it for trunking? No, it's private 192.168.1.2

Or else is it using a private IP address and connecting through the BSR router? If so, what firewall and/or port-forwarding rules have you set up?
Answer, I don't know the exact way to port forward the BSR router to work with the BCM, Any help would be appreciated.

Do the IP phones have private IP addresses? Yes, Main phone is 192.168.1.151. Every time a call comes in via the SIP trunks, the BCM sends out a "spoof" public IP address from the phone system.

Are they on the same subnet as the BCM? Subnet is 255.255.255.0, same as BCM.

Is the default gateway correctly set on the phones? 192.168.1.1 same gateway as the BCM, so it looks as though everything is set up properly.

Hope you can help. Thank you!

Actually I need to correct my statement. Everytime the BCM sends out an IP call, it takes the IP address of the IP Phone such as 192.168.1.5 and "spoofs" the address to a public IP address in the nature of 23.45.68.21 or something similar to that.

Sorry for all my posts, I am really anxious to get this figured out.
