What is the correct syntax for selecting the cell in Column A of the active row?

what have you tried ? Have you looked in the help file ?

Rgds, Geoff

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.

Yes, I have looked through VBA help file and have also searched this site.

I know how to use a relative reference:

ActiveCell.Offset(0, -2).Range("A1").Select

and how to use an absolute reference:

Range("A6").Select

but I am unaware how to combine the two, or even if it is possible to do so. Hence posting the question on here.

One way:
ActiveSheet.Cells(ActiveCell.Row, 1)

Hope This Helps, PH.
