I have a small SBS environnment with 1 DC and 10 XP clients

the motherboard of the server has crashed and we had to set up an new DC.(prefeably with the same domain name),

my problem,
how can the clients jejoin the new domain controle without loosing their existing userprofiles.

I fear that the existing credentials on the client dont allow to rejoin the new DC without creating everywhere new profiles on the clients...

thanks for that hint

On the new server, run a Directory Services restore from your last full backup on the crashed server, and it will become the old server, with the same domain setup and accounts. Then if you join your systems to that domain, you won't have to worry about additional profiles being created.

If you have to have a new domain, then I would run the Files and Settings Migration Wizard that's in the Programs -> Accessories of each XP system (run it while the normal user is logged on with cached credentials) and export the profile settings. Then log into the new domain, log on as a user account in the new domain and run the migration wizard again to import your settings back into the new profile.

directory service restore:

does that mean, to restore the system state with the windows backup ??

thank you very much... last question

there are 4 advanced restore options i can set:

1. restore security (i marked it)

2. restore junction points, and restore file and folder data under junction points to the original location ( I marked it)

3. when restoring replicated data sets, mark the restored data as the primary data for all replicas (i marked it)

4. preserve existing volume mount points (i didnt marked it)

whats u think.... thanks and have a nice weekend
