On one of my PC's, I need to reinstall WIN98 without deleting my old files. I heard that you simply reinstall it on top of itself.

I tried this however, when I get to the "Running Windows for the First Time" screen, the Registry Checker suddenly pops up with an error and states it is replacing the registry with an old copy. Windows then boots but the setup never properly completes (i.e. Control Panel, etc. are not set up).

How do I stop the Registry Checker from rearing its ugly head?

Thanks

I haven't ran across this problem before, but when your doing the setup and installing Windows 98 SE over top of itself, when it comes to a point where it asks you if you want to save system files, choose no. This should help you out if not reply back and I will try to offer further assistance.

What was the error message or problem that led you to re-install?

I would avoid doing this at all costs.

If you've upgraded components like Internet Explorer, Directx, or Windows Media Player, you are essentually downgrading those componenets and now have a system with mismatched DLLs. You are in for more trouble now.

I would also recommend that you go to
and Download Doc Memory.
Run it and test your RAM
That kind of repeated registry error message can be a sign of bad RAM.

this didn't help. The problem began when I tried to install an HP Scanner. After the setup ran, I started getting the message: "Error in Virtual Memory Manager: Header too Big" and then my system shut itself off.

>> Download Doc Memory ...

I'm doing this right now

Truthfully, you should have posted that first error message and sought help to just that specific problem.

HP has a good Knowledge Base also.

If you do get your system up and running, be sure to go to Windows Update and upgrade those components again.

Can you load win95 over win95 without all the programs being remoed?

If you are using a CD for the reinstall as opposed to the CAB files local on the machine....At the DOS prompt type setup /? and you will get a list of switches. There is a switch to skip the scan.

I hope this helps..
