Our installation of SBS2003 is encountering several issues and Im thinking maybe to reinstall, can I reinstall 'over the top' of the current installation and keep settings, domain, mailboxes etc?

Main problems with the current installation are the email retrieval keeps locking on 'downloading' and the server has to be re booted, but the main problem is that two of our main programs have just stopped working, we've tried removing and installing these programs but the problem is the same. The only link is that both programs are written in Visual Basic C++ , could this be a link? There are other problems as well but they dont cause too much trouble, internal website doesn't work, connectcomputer feature doesn't work etc etc, will a reinstall like this fix these issues.

Any help apprerciated.

How long ago was this server installed? You cannot really reinstall 'over the top' as this wouldn't really fix much of anything.

What stands out to me though is that you have other programs running on this server without having the main server functions even operating properly. You really should never have anything running on an SBS unless it's working properly to begin with.

Not having connectcomputer functional basically means your entire network is non-functional. That, to me, would be a problem worth fixing... and you probably won't fix it by installing SBS any other way than a clean install.

I tried reinstalling over an existing install and it thinks I am upgrading to OEM and does not allow me to fully install the server - so far, IIS is partially crippled and Sharepoint is not installed. Once I copy my files, I intend to do a fresh install.

phillid2, you can overcome that problem with a registry edit... but I wouldn't even try to do an in-place upgrade (reinstall over an existing install) when you have the problems you describe. You really do need to do a full reformat and fresh install.
