Help. I just converted a Compaq Proliant ML370 server from NT 4.0 to Windows 2003 server. I was unaware of Compaq's server management software tools until after I completed the conversion. Now I want to intall the tape software Arcserve on the reformatted server. However I don't know how to get around Compaq's server management tools. The Arcserve cds direct me to the Compaq server management tool. I don't want to reinstall the server management tools though I will if I must.

Should I just tell the user to forget about Arcserve and purchase another vendor's backup software such as Veritas?

Thanks.

Larry

Larry, I'm not quite sure what problem you're trying to describe here ? I've not heard of an ARCserve CD pointing to Compaq Management Tools for a long time (not since v6.61 and before), and even then they were bundled with the Compaq SmartStart CD Packages and supported by Compaq.

I assume you are trying to install v9.01 of ARCserve or later, as this is the first version to support Windows 2003 - anything before that is not supported on Win 2003

Thank you for the prompt posting Vschumpy.

I believe you nailed the problem when you wrote about being confused by the problem I described. But you obviously know something about Compaq servers and the way they used to be bundle software around their SmartStart tool. I referred to Compaq's server manager tools and that could be misleading. Yes, I was referring to the software that Compaq shipped with the server and it was probably called SmartStart as you wrote. Compaq wanted users to initialize and setup their Compaq servers using this tool and it component CD.

My problem was/is that I was visiting a remote office and had not worked on a Compaq server in several years. I totally forgot about their server startup tool (mostly I do email support and phone help desk stuff and don't work on servers). Once I finished setting up the server I found the CD for the SmartStart software. I also found two Arcserve CDs. I could not install either Arcserve CD as it seemed to direct me to the SmartStart tool or was only documentation. I called HP but they refused to point me in the correct direction in spite of the millions of dollars our organization spends on their products. Oddly enough they answered a Jet Direct question for me gratis but would not offer any server advice for my question....how to install Arcserve software without having to reinstall SmartStart. Must I reinstall SmartStart? I was up against the clock and had the impression at the time that I could not do this without corrupting the new OS (W2K3). And yes, it is an old copy. An inventory of the server before I started showed the Arcserve DBConfig App. Version as 1,0,0,1 though I really don't know what this means.

You are probably correct that this version of Arcserve may not be compatible with W2K3 but I wanted to try anway.

Again, thanks for your advice. Anything else you could recommend would be appreciated.

Larry

Hmm chances are a version of SmartStart that old isn't going to be compatible with Win2003 either unfortunately, so you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

If you're happy with ARCserve or wanted to see what the latest version is like you could register and download a 30 trial of the latest version (11.1) starting here :

I would guess if you can find the licence keys/proof of purchase of the old version that you may be eligible for a cheaper than full price upgrade deal as well.

Hope this helps, but I don't think you're going to have any luck trying to get smartstart to install the older versions even if it was compatible with Win2003.
