I had to reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Server on a DELL SERVER and when I was doing so, I set it up as a WORKGROUP instead
of assigning it a DOMAIN name. When I attempt to CHANGE
the WORKGROUP to a DOMAIN the system LOCKS up and eventually
will time out in about 3 minutes letting me know that it
was not able to perform the change. I need to know if there
is another way to CHANGE the WORKGROUP to a DOMAIN or if I
must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Server from scratch.

Thanks... R.E.J.

When you installed the server did you select whether it will be a PDC, BDC or standalone?

Do you have a PDC (primary domain controller) already?

It sounds as if when you try to change to the Domain, the server is trying to go out onto your network and find the domain and it doesn't.

The registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policy\PolSrvRo

has what type of server it is (PDC, BDC etc). Check the value and repost. New Zealand, a great place to visit.

The Registry Entry on the NT Server reads like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security
There doesn't seem to be any Policy Settings Installed.

Point of Reference: When I performed the NT Server
reinstall, I selected WORKGROUP instead of DOMAIN when
it asked the question of how I wanted it setup.

I was setting the Server up as a Workstation because I did not know you could build what I now know to be a Trust Relationship between two DOMAINS.

Do you think it would be faster to reinstall the NT Server
Operating System or is there another quicker way to assign
the Server a Domain Name.

You are correct when you say, "It sounds as if when you try to change to the Domain, the server is trying to go out onto your network and find the domain and it doesn't"

This is exactly what I think it is doing. I do have it networked with another Windows NT Server using a Cross-Over Patch Cable, yet I am not able to log onto this Domain either.

Thank You... REJ141

Was this server the PDC on the previous Domain?

As far as I know this Server was not the Primary Domain Controller on the Previous Domain. It was however networked with the Old Domain Server temporarily until this happened:

I went to look at the Permission Settings and the Amount of Virtual Memory for the Permission Table was exceeded and crashed the system. I had to perform a Full Windows NT Server System Recovery to regain access to the NT Server Operating System.

Do you have another server already set up as a domain controller? What you are trying to do is bring this server into a domain and if there is not already a PDC present you will not be able to do this. The domain is created when you install server and make it the PDC. You will probably have to reinstall and designate this as the PDC.
