I reinstalled windows98se on a friends computer because it was loaded with junk (i've done this millions of times). After it was finished a message popped up saying that no ps/2 mouse was detected? It was plugged in. I restarted, nothing. I tried a USB mouse, nothing. I tried a wireless USB mouse, nothing. So i figure that something must have heppened to the BIOS mouse setting, but i can't get into the bios?? I've never not been able to get into the bios.

It's a Compaq Presario 5660.

I need help!

Thanks,

Travis

I'll look into this for you - but are you pressing F10 to get into the bios. - Compaqs, always have to be different!

Did you re-install win98 with disks that came with the compaq? If not that could be why you can't get the bios to come up. I think alot of compaq machines put the bios onto a seperate partition on the hard disk. I would look at their website for specific info about that model#
Also...did you try the non working mouse on another computer? what does device manager say about your ps2 port?
Maybe someone else with more knowledge about the compaq stuff could comment?
Hope this is helpfull,

Even if the BIOS is on a separate partition you should still be able to access it, right? Or am i missing something?

I was not aware that Compaq BIOS was F10, i'll try that.

It does have 2 hard drives and i thought that might be it, so i removed the second one and installed in the compaq. I tried the mouse on another pc and it works fine.

I'll let you all know if this all works.

Thanks

That's the problem with older Compaqs. They put an extremely limited non-flashable bios in their machines which then refer to a small partition for the more detailed version.

If you wipe a machine with FDisk and blow away this partition with all the others the machine will still work but you will no longer be able to get into the bios to make any changes.

I do not know if your machine falls into this category ... the Deskpro 5133's did. Their website should have a utility for rebuilding this partition (if you need it in your case) but good luck in finding it. I suspect you'll lose your main partition if you run this tool so watch out for that.

Later ...

One lesson we can learn from all of this:
"Don't buy Compaq !!"

They almost oblige you to buy their hardware otherwise it won't work.

F10 did get me into the BIOS but there are very little options. There is no option for enabling a mouse, the only input device shown was USB keyboard support.

I reset them to default. When it reboots it says windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer......you may now attach one.

It still doesnt work, i've tried everything i know of. It worked perfectly until i ran the fdisk, i'm guessing that blowing this partition did it. If anyone finds a link to the download for the BIOS please let me know.

...Kocky....I didn't buy it, but i appreciate your "Kocky" remark!!!

Is there anytihng in your device manager with a yellow exclamatin point? Could be that the drivers for the mouse are incorrect, or even the drivers for the port.
