What is the going rate on having a shop reinstall a WinOS.

Hypothetically:

Win98 or XP on a new drive, unformatted or partitioned, but installed.

Thanks.

That would depend on the shops labor rate and if your CDs were in good shape. Will vary widely.

Many shops charge $50 just to look at a PC. If it is a laptop that just increases the problem.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Well, we charge €80 an hour for such a thing. Just to give you an idea.

Peace,

Yellow

Try and find a shop that has a package deal. If the customer brings me the pc and I can work on it in my lab I charge $115.00 for a Format and Reinstall of Basic apps. If the shop charges by the hour you never know my much it will be.

Last year I did one privately (not a shop) for £50, including install apps, backing up/restore of data, configure internet connection and Windows critical updates to that particular time.
It took about 2.5 hours.

Installation of any OS and applications is so easy. I best advise here would be to fine a friend of yours who is good with computers and get a few beers and snack and he/she will get the job done. I do that with my friends all the time. Its good practice for me and you get to man-talk and exchange war stories.

For every problem there is a solution, for every solution there is a tech behind it.

heh, it took me 3 days (about 10 hours a day) the last time I had to redo my desktop...thats a lot of beer and snacks :)
Then again, considering it takes about as long to install Visual Sudio .Net as it takes to install Windows, I guess three days wasn't so bad.

The never-completed website:

For 98 I usually charge $50.00 max. In the shop I charge less since I can be productive elsewhere.
XP is at slight additional cost for another half hour.

Does your cost include updating the OS, and the installation of hardware drivers?

In all cases ive experienced, I am not furnished with the drivers for expansion cards, chips, etc, and find myself spending a considerable amount of time getting and installing the neccessary drivers to get the system up.Is this a typical setting for you veterans as well?

If I do such a think, I make sure every driver for every device is there, because most clients are... let's call it "too inexperienced with computers"... to install all drivers.

True, it ain't always easy. Sometimes you encounter very cheap hardware of an unknown brand and then it might take a while to find out what it is a clone from. But it's part of the service I think.

Peace,

Yellow
