Windows XP Update did its best to install DirectX9.0b on one of my systems a few months ago. It failed while trying to copy DPVACM.DLL. It tried to copy that file for 15 mins, then aborted saying it could not copy a necessary file. Now, everything works on the PC with 9.0a, so this is not absolutely critical.

Anyway, I copied over the redestributable 9.0b kit, and tried again offline. No luck. Tried in safe mode. Tried deleting the DirectX key in the Registry, tried deleting all instances of DPVACM.DLL on the PC. Tried going back to a "known good point". All to no avail.

I have searched these forums and the web generally for ideas. Found nothing. Any suggestions?

First try reinstalling DirectX as the Administrator account itself. If that doesn't work try installing it in safe mode.

Yes, I have now ensured that I was trying to install DirectX from the administrator account, and then using Safe Mode. No luck. Any suggestions for next steps?

Thinking about it, I did not have any problems updating Windows or DirectX before installing Norton Antivirus Pro 2004. Since then, not alone do I have this issue, but I have never been able to complete a full system virus scan. The system suddenly bluescreens and reboots during the scan. Based on other PCs, I estimate that it gets 30% through the scan. However, DPVACM.DLL does not appear to have anything to do with Norton AV.

The links to the MS site in the previous response were not of any particular help, other than providing general information.

Umm i always disconnect from the LAN (which my intenet comes through) then dactivate norton (2003 for me)
I then go ahead and install to my hearts content, in the knowledge that no nasty is getting at me.
I would also suggest having a nose about the symantec site to see if you can find any useful info about DirectX and norton, sorry the links were not of any help jus thought directx install would help
