Windows XP Update did its best to install DirectX9.0b on one of my systems a few months ago. It failed while trying to copy DPVACM.DLL. It tried to copy that file for 15 mins, then aborted saying it could not copy a necessary file. Now, everything works on the PC with 9.0a, so this is not absolutely critical.
Anyway, I copied over the redestributable 9.0b kit, and tried again offline. No luck. Tried in safe mode. Tried deleting the DirectX key in the Registry, tried deleting all instances of DPVACM.DLL on the PC. Tried going back to a "known good point". All to no avail.
I have searched these forums and the web generally for ideas. Found nothing. Any suggestions?
