Registry Question

I'm running Win98se and can't boot my computer to windows due to missing .vxd's even using a start up disk. I have read most of the vxd threads listed here and plan to restore to a previous registry backup. My question is will data in office programs be lost using this method? Thanks in advance.

Edfair's right. Restoring to a previous backup of the registry won't harm any data on your hard drive. In Windows 95/98, you're only changing the User.dat and System.dat files in the Windows directory.

Even if you reinstalled Windows on top of itself, you wouldn't lose your saved Office work... ~cdogg

One other question-how do I get another password for the cmos--I didn't set up this computer and don't know the password?

You might be able to find some generic passwords that will override it on the NET somewhere if you know what BIOS you have. However, your best option is to try and reset it. Unplug the computer, open the case, and take the Lithium Ion battery off the motherboard. Let it sit for a few minutes and put it back in. There might also be a jumper next to the battery that resets the BIOS. You may need to consult the manual on that one...
