Had some trouble with trojans, now cleared.
But I seem to have a possibly corrupt registry.
Occasional hangs, and so on.....

Downloaded and ran Registry Repair, which seems to just stall in 2 phases - 'Custom Controls' and 'Shared Programs'.

All else works. (Of course, the above 2 aren't defined). Regsupreme also stalls partway through.

Any ideas? Please only say 'scratch and reload XP' as a last resort :)

You could try a repair reinstall rather than the draconian full format reinstall:
You will need to head to Microsoft Update afterwards, but your data and program installations will be intact.

If you have System Restore enabled, and a viable restore point prior to the infection, start there.

Or relatedly, if System Restore was active you can manually replace the registry hives from a known point in time:

Try the program "Registry Mechanic" by PC Tools. It keeps a smooth running registry. Other than using this tool I would stronly recommend not messing with the registry at all. You'll find that this program will probably find hundreds of errors in your registry. I hope this provides some help for you.

iolo has a great program which you can test before you buy. System Mechanic 5.5(x) I use it 100% for Registery cleaner, junk cleaner, shortcut cleaner... I also use the old Win95 Regcleaner... (after using make sure you shutdown) then restart....shutdown clears the memory reboot does not...(Regvac 4 - works very well also) (RFA - Registery1st Aid) all work very well in XP SP3 - so you should have NO Problems - there is a bak of the current registery... that should work if the main is (removed-renamed). I'd try several ways/programs that claim they repair rather than "FORMAT" Windows has a repair that works OK... 2d option only removed the current windows... leaves all program intact..
it works very well...
