I have a problem with my pc, this morning when i rebooted the pc had some issues. I can't get to the my Windows 98 OS, it hangs just after the splash screen for windows. Then an error message "data error on drive C:" next we hit retry and another error message "VKD Drive Error" says it is an initialization error. As soon as i try to run any utitlity "in dos" the computer locks up at "scanning registry point", any suggestions would be greatly appreciated other than a FDISK.
thanks

For starters you could use your EBD, go to the c:\windows and do the attribute stuff and change the backup to be the real. Then try again by rebooting. Ed Fair

Hey, thank you for the reply but i need to ask a favor i am by no means a pro at the windows seen as you sound like you may be. could you drop it down a couple of knoches, i guess i don't know what you mean about the attributes you were talking about with changing back up to real. thanks

VKD is Virtual Keyboard Device. Try shutting down, and disconnect and reconnect the keyboard and see if that helps. If that does not help, try another keyboard if possible.

My comment about the registry:
Get to DOS on bootup, go to windows, Attrib -s -h -r *.da*
rename system.dat system.old
rename user.dat user.old
copy system.da0 system.dat /v
copy user.da0 user.dat /v
attrib +s +h +r *.da*

This would copy an earlier version of the registry to be the current version if in fact the registry is munged.

Any time you mess with the registry files you are at risk of corrupting your system.
Prior to doing this you might want to have a correctly functioning EBD with all the required utilities on it so you can restore the original registry files if you do have problems.

This was just a guess on my part, that the error message from the registry was related to the keyboard error message. Ed Fair
