Can anyone recommend any good programs for clearing the registry of anything that isn't needed/isn't important/etc safely? I'm always slightly worried about trying to remove stuff like old uninstall references myself

Any help is greatly apprechiated

I always use easycleaner by toniarts and I've never had any problems with it. Just google for it!

In addition it does other stuff like clearing your IE cache, removing unneccesary and duplicate files.

RegSeeker.

EasyCleaner

Purchase. (one of the best there is).

jv16 PowerTools (or their cut down version RegSupreme)

Ok, cheers for the help. I'll try to do it when I actually get my computer. (Long story)
