Hello,
I get the following error everytime I try to do a "full" backup of my XPpro workstation. Job gets marked as FAILED. I'm using backup exec 8.60 which is running on our Win2000 server. Here is a paste from the log:
Code:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Performing Remote Agent backup

Media Name: "Media created 3/1/2002 08:22:10 AM"
Backup of "\\WS07\System?State "
Backup set #8 on storage media #1
Backup set description: "End of Week Full"
Backup Type: FULL - Back Up Files - Reset Archive Bit
Backup started on 4/18/2003 at 9:13:05 PM.
Directory not found. Can not backup directory \Registry\C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile and its subdirectories.

Backup completed on 4/18/2003 at 9:14:47 PM.
Backed up 2103 files in 125 directories.
1 item was skipped.
Processed 366,124,009 bytes in 1 minute and 42 seconds.
Throughput rate: 205.4 MB/min
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone suggest a fix?

I should also have mentioned that the directory in question does actually exist on my machine...

The backup server (and Backup Exec) probably do not have proper permissions for the file on your computer.

-or-

The file is in use when the backup is being done and you need to have the Open File Option for it to work.

I'm not sure of the best way to set the permissions but afaik the backup software runs as administrator. I checked the permissions on the \config\ folder and it's subfolders & files and made sure that administrator group has full access. Haven't tried changing the open file backup options yet. But on other open files I regularly get either "-backed up" or "-skipped" with no errors or failed jobs.

OOPPPS! I may have overlooked something....

Directory not found. Can not backup directory \Registry\C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile and its subdirectories.

That '\Registry\' should not be before 'C:'. And that matches the error you are getting "Directory not found." since there can't be a directory with a name that starts before the drive letter.

I just made a Test Job and selected only my System State for backup. Looking at the graphics version of the file selections I see three "files" in the right pane with grayed out selection boxes (which are checked) called:
COM+ Class Registration Database
Registry
System Files

The COM+ database could be a problem. I have the COM+ service disabled since I don't have any software that uses it afaik. Maybe that database doesn't exist?

If I switch to the text version of the selection display, it reads:
\\WS07\System?State\*.* /SUBDIR

Any more ideas? I think the first thing I need to do is start the COM+ services and run my test backup again...

I can't find any reference to the path that contains \registry\ at the beginning of it, so don't know how to fix it.

I ran a test backup job on the system state of another winxp workstation on our network and got the exact same situation. Also, setting the COM+ services to automatic and rebooting did not solve the problem. Still no idea what is causing it.

I have the same issue also. I appears to have started when we updated the user's XP laptop from windowsupdate.
The directory does exist. Looks to be from the System State backup since it starts with Registry. I don't want to exclude it because it might come back to haunt me when/if a restore is needed. Any suggestions?

I was able to get rid of this problem by upgrading to build 3878 of the Veritas backup exec software (free download). I made a support request about this issue through their web site email support link, and they responded with a fairly good step by step for doing the upgrade.

I have found their free email based support to be fairly helpful, but turn around time is usually one to three days.
