Register Server 1

Hi All,

I have installed Server 2000. Analyser and Enterprise Manager can connect to it fine from the local machine.

I am trying to register it from a machine on the network, but I get "server does not exixt or access denied etc" error.

I have setup the user on the server and I am using Windows authentication.

Any ideas if what I can do next to trouble shoot?

Run CliConfg on network computer and see what protocols are enabled. Also try to create an ODBC connection using Control Panel->Administrative Tools->ODBC, just to see if you can do that.

Machine which u r trying to connect via network has to be installed the sql client.

What version of SQL / service pack are you running?

It is SQL 2000. It is weird, I could access a old database, which has now been deleted, and new database has been created, but i can't access the new database.

I have tried ODBC from Administrative Tools - same error.

I have looked at the properties on the server, under "Network Configuration" and then "TCP/IP properites" the port is set at 0. Should this be 1443?

It should be 1433.

On the server (where the database is)...

Click Start -> Run
Type: svrnetcn
Click OK

Make sure TCP/IP is an enabled protocol.

Click TCP/IP then Properties. The port that SQL Server uses will be shown.

Then, on the same computer, check your firewall settings. SQL Server is blocked by default in Windows Firewall. In order for other computers to connect, you need to unblock the port.

Click Start -> Control Panel
Click Network Connections
Click 'Change Windows Firewall Settings'
Click the 'Exceptions' tab.
Click 'Add Port'

NAME: Microsoft SQL Server
Port Number: (Whatever port you found using svrnetcn)

Click OK.

At this point, you should be able to connect to SQL Server from other computers.

I have checked the port (with svrnetc), it is 1433. I don't have the windows firewall enabled (or any others for now), but I still cant connect.

As mentioned earlier, I was connecting to this server on a older database, no problem, but on the new database setup, it won't.

Not sure what to try next.

In order for a server to be registered (from a client), does there have to be a user set-up?

I have been following the steps through as described. And still got the same error message as micanguk. However this morning after rebooting the server and then starting up the client I have connected successfully. Thanks. I created a SQL login on the server and then used that to connect from the client.

Ended up installing the latest patches on the SQL 2000 server and that managed to do the trick.
