OK - I am working on a machine that was extensively infected with trojans, spyware and adware - I have removed the majority of these but cannot get into the registry to do a final clean up as I get an error messages saying Regedit cannot be found or doesn't exist etc.

The machine is running Windows ME - Does anyone have any idea how I can get around this - isn't there a switch you can type from a cmd prompt - does anyone know what this is? I can't seem to find it on the net....

Try running regsvr32 and see what you get. Also, you can browse out to the regedit file by doing a search on it.

My first thought with what you're describing is that some of the spyware/trojans you had changed your default paths.

From what I've read on WinME those are stored in the registry, however it is possible to work around this problem to recreate them...

Run hjt and check for an O7 line. If one is present, fixing it may solve the problem.

Merijn's tutorial shows the "switch" affected in the registry.

Here is an alternative registry editor which I see recommended and used on the antispyware forums.
One of its advantages is letting you in when regedit is locked out.

It's 10 O'Clock ( somewhere! ).
Are your registry and data backed up?

Thanks guys - I shall give all of your suggestions a try this afternoon - hopefully I will be able to get around the problem - I will let you know....
