We recently installed a new IBM 7040 Regatta. It has a Hardware Management Console that is a PC running Linux. We need to be able to establish a remote connection to this HMC in order to enable/disable processor configurations for testing. Has anyone been able to do this? I have contacted IBM with this question, and they are in the process of investigating it because they didn't have a ready answer.

We are not physically close to this box (45 minute drive away), and we don't want to have to physically go to the box everytime we need to do something via the HMC.

Thanks, Steve

If it's plugged into the network you just need to login to it with an X server.

Is it because the network isn't configuret on it??

Some of this is too much to answer in a couple of short paragraphs or a few bullet points. You are actually going to be able to tell someone in a few lines how they are to partition a p690? Obviously, you have never done anything with LPARs. Not that it is terribly complicated, but you cannot answer everything quickly and you have no idea of their hardware or needs. How do they want it configured? Unless you reply, reply, reply you cannot.

There are places to get better answers to more complex and detailed questions than on here. For the most part the answers are okay, however, you have no idea who is replying. Are you going to trust your operation and expensive p690 to someone who may not really know what they are talking about? I have seen some answers on here that are completely wrong, they may have had a good intention, but that is not really helping the individual asking, then they get an opposite response and how do they know what is factual?

Some things just should not be answered here or asked for the sake of the person asking. Such as LPARS, as I said you want it correct. If you paid that much for a p690, why not pay a little more to IBM, an IBM business partner or a consultant who will help you with it and has a direct interest in your interests?

IBM has now reversed (I talked to software support rather than hardware support) and there is a way to do this via web based system manager. I'll post how to do it tomorrow.
