Our public folder store is reaching the 16Gb limit so I have moved about 1Gb of messages to a PST file. However the size of the public folder store has remained the same even after a defrag using eseutil.

Can anyone tell me why the size of the store hasn't reduced? Are the messages just marked for deletion until a later date?

Any help would be appreciated.

No. I created a PST file in Outlook 2003 and dragged and dropped the messages from the public folder into the PST.

I will have a look at PerfectDisk. Thank you.

Did you let the online defrag run before doing offline?

I think the online has to mark the recoved space as white space before offline can compact it.

I did the offline defrag first. Subsequently an online defrag was completed overnight.

I think the answer maybe as follows:

• If deleted item retention is set, you may want to temporarily reduce retention to zero (0) days:
a. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
b. Right-click Mailbox Store, and then click Properties.
c. Click the Limits tab, and then type 0 in the Keep deleted items for days box.

My "keep deleted items" is set to seven days so I should see the extra space in about a week.

Keep checking for event ID 1221 in your XC app event log. This will tell you how much space the online defrag has released as white space.

You can then do an offline defrag to recover the disk space.

The event id 1221 has now appeared and shows 833MB available after online defrag but the store has not shrunk. Do I still need to do the offline defrag?

It's my understanding, that the log of 1221 will show you how much you will regain in space, after an offline defrag. It takes about an hour to do, depending on your system.

I have done an offline defrag and the size of the store has reduced by the amount shown in the event id 1221. Thanks for your help.
