Hi,

I'm trying to install RedHat6.1 on my laptop, an IBM Thinkpad T20. I reboot with the installation CD (store bought) in the cd-rom drive and get the display asking if I want to do an install, upgrade, expert, etc... I choose install and the image starts to boot. It goes through all of it's device detection etc. and then fails saying it cannot "open display". I'm assuming it's having problems with the S3 Savage/IX video chipset and that I need an updated display driver. My problem? Where can I find and what is the proper display driver to get? How do I install it if I can't even get into installation mode for the OS? BTW this is going to dual-boot with Windo$e98. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.

There should be an option that will let you boot in pure text mode. Try that, perhaps?

I recommend you try Slackware 7.1, or Mandrake 7.1/7.2. I've found they both tend to be a little friendlier to laptops. It's especially useful to remember that if the standard X driver for your card is not working or not available, that the 'framebuffer' mode X-server usually works just fine. (I believe that is also available for RedHat 7, but I've heard there are a lot of other problems with RH7.)

Hi d3funct,

Firstly, I recommend that you acquire Mandrake 7.2 installation CD.

Secondly, try not to use Redhat ever on a notebook.

Lastly, if you are still keen to use Redhat 6.1, make sure you read the HOWTO on setting-up your VGA to display in frame-buffer mode at
Seriously speaking to save your time, use Mandrake 7.2

I am a happy user of Mandrake 7.2 on my ASUS 7400 P-II notebook.
