I have 2 HD in my machine 12Gb Win98 and 10Gb Linux (Red Hat 6.2). I have just recently installed Red Hat 6.2. I used disk druid and chose to create bood disk and not use LILO. <br>Red Hat installed OK but when I removed Linux boot floppy and tried to go back to Win98 I got the LILO: prompt. On doing a TAB it displayed no OS's. I booted from a WIN95 boot floppy because I could not find my Win98 one.When doing dir/w it displayed lots of garbage.<br>I then booted into linux and mounted /dev/hda as a dos vfat drive and could see all my windows directories & files. They are all still there. I then did fdisk /mbr and rebooted. This time instead of LILO: prompt I got message 'invalid system disk'. <br>I do not know how to get my WIN98 system back. <br>I am wondering if I need to copy sys.com from a win98 boot floppy.<br>Can anyone help?<br>&nbsp;

at the lilo prompt type dos to go into win98, or go into linux(by typing linux) and at the prompt type lilo /u to remove the boot loader(only if you intend to use the bootdisk from now on). I would definitly recomend Mandrake 7.1 <p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.8m.com>kb244@kb244.8m.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)<br>

Running 'fdisk /mbr' from a win9x boot floppy will restore your master boot record.<br> <p>Mike<br><a href=mailto:michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com>michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com</a><br><a href= Cargill's Corporate Web Site</a><br>

actually it'll just clear the boot record, doesnt restore it to it's original condition, going into linux(if you can) and running lilo /u will restore the boot record to it's previous condition. <p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.8m.com>kb244@kb244.8m.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)<br>

Mine is the opposite problem: I've split a 1+GB partition off my 10GB HD and tried to install Red Hat 6.0 on it. Succeeded actually . . .

The problem is, it doesn't seem to install LILO properly. Every time I reboot after a &quot;successful&quot; install, I get just Windows 98, not LILO.

I use a Compaq 5360 w/ bootable CDROM and Win 98.

What Gives?

I don't know if this will actually help. I have a similar situation however. I have 2 hard drives: a 17GB win98,in which the OS was installed first but the drive is designated as a primary slave drive; and a 2GB lin-mandrake 6.0 in which the OS was installed second even though the drive is my primary master. I use my floppy boot to load Linux. The reason for this is that when I bootup, the load sequence first searches for a boot record from the CD-Rom, then the floppy drive, then the hard drives. Of course, I changed which drive is looked at in the sequence in my BIOS. It goes to my primary slave and then loads up win98. If I want to use Linux I just pop in my floppy and bootup (or reboot). This way is a lot easier than going into my BIOS and changing which drive the sequence is going to look at depending upon which OS I want to use. So you might want to look at your BIOS and see which drive your boot sequence is looking at. You might have to change it to find your windows.
