Hello,

Have ( attempted ) to configure sendmail to use my ms exchange server as a ail relayer. When i queue mail, mail status shows "Deferred: nameserver: server.domain.com : hostname lookup failure" ( actual names supressed of course !).

This machine does not run dns and can ping the mail relay host ok.

Any ideas????

Thanks

Hi,

Before you try setting up sendmail, are you sure that exchange is configured to allow you to relay. Version 5.5 onwards defaults to not relaying mail although it can be confiured to do so. Normally, you might open it up to lan addresses but you probably need the NT admin people to actively do this if it's not already in place. See --> .

Why do you want to relay though ?

Rgds

Can the machine ping the relay via IP-address, or FQDN? Seems like a lookup problem. Or a misspelling of the FQDN of the mail-relay (Smart Host?) in the sednmail.cf file...

Thanks for the reply.

THe MSX server is relaying internal mail only, ie only if submitted internally. I am the NT admin as well, and have MSX cofigured not to relay SPAM or external submissions!

The relay is spelt correctly ( including FQDM ) and i can ping it no problem. Error message displays the lookup failure but spells the hostname correctly.

BTW prtot is SMTP, ste to pt 25.

Any more ideas? Thanks.
