I have downloaded a kernel update to my pc then ftp'ed to my linux box. How can I install the updated kernel. The box has no connectivity to the outside world so I can't do the up2date command. The kernel update is an rpm, I thought I could just do rpm -i kernelversion to install but that dosen't appear to work. Could someone enlighten me.

Thanks
Jesse

What happens after you run the "rpm -ivh packagename.rpm"? Do you get an error? Check to see if its installed by running "rpm -qa | grep kernel". If it is, you probably just need to modify your bootloader (GRUB or LILO) to boot the new kernel.

No error message and the rpm -qa|grep kernel does not show the new kernel. I will tell you though when I tried this I just used the rpm -i I didn't use the vh flags. I don't know if this makes a difference.

I was just notified about a new yesterday and went and downloaded the tar file which has all the different kernel types in there, you know enterprise, boot, debug and so on. I have untarred the file in my home directory but have not tried to load those yet. Can I just do them all at the same time. I am still new to Linux. I know in Solaris you just do patchadd or install_cluster. RPM is supossed to be what pkgadd is to solaris right?

Anyway I really need to get the kernel upgraded because it is at 12 right now and this new kernel update is all the way up to 25. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Jesse

Try running it with the -ivh flags and see if it returns any output. If it does, copy and paste it here. Also, tell me the exact name of the RPM you are trying to install.

About the kernel version, the 12 and 25 your talking about are just patch levels. 2.4 is the latest Linux kernel, while the third number is just a patch release. The latest right now is 2.4.21 ( I'm not saying you shouldn't upgrade, its just not as outdated as it looks.
