I have an older Merlin II system I just received. I already have another processor coming to change it to a Legend but the Merlin II processor (w/FM2) is in it right now and I hooked it up just to see if it was working. I'm not familiar with these systems. When I turn the power on, the green light on the power supply comes on and stays on and a red light near the top of the processor comes on for about 15 or 20 seconds solid, then goes off. Does that mean the processor is bad? I couldn't get a dial tone connecting a ATL phone and a line cord to the ports on the 408 card. Bad processor?? Fill me in, fellas....

1st, a momentary red light doesn't usually mean anything.

2nd, take the FM2 out, place it on a HARD SURFACE and then press in on all socketed chips.

That may or may not fix anything, it certainly won't break anything.

If it was configured with something other than a 408 in the first slot, you could be looking at a board mismatch.

To reset it, take the processor out of the clam shell, and remove the straps near the battery for a few seconds.

Then put it all back together and see what happens.

OR - Wait for the Legend Processor !

When you connect the ATL phone to the port, what kind of cord are you using? A regular line cord will not work. You must have an 8 conductor cord, a computer networking cable will do (same as ethernet cable)

Checked the chips on the processor and FM2. And I was using a cat5 cable. Not sure what you mean about the straps near the battery. Where's that?

Still not working after checking stuff. Since it isn't my main processor (replacing it) it won't matter in the long run, but would be nice to know if it's working for reselling it "as-is, working" on eBay or something.

Ok,

Make sure that the CAT-5 cable is not a crossover cable, because that will not work. That red warning light is SUPPOSED to come on for a few seconds while booting up. It could be that the ATL phone is bad, or that your cable is bad. Check the easy things first. I have never dealt with the Merlin II's, except one where the people had a ton of those funky 008D cards installed with the 7406 phones. Thus, I have no Idea wether or not there is some sort of a "board renumber" procedure that can be done.

Merlinman?
TTT?

Best of luck,

-Austin

yes merlin 11 had a board renumber , but you need to have the boards in the right order after the move to reboot ,that why it is always a good idea to number all boards to the slots

The boards have numbers written with marker on the bottoms 0-4. But I also have a picture of the system before it was removed and the order they're numbered doesn't match the picture. I've tried both ways and get the same results..nothing. We'll see what we can do.

Ok,

Look at the bottom of your "ATL" phone, and make sure that the model number begins with "73". There are many Definity sets that are identical to the Merlin sets, but of course, those Definity sets will not work on Merlin.

At this point, I would have a cup o' java, and 2 aspirin before I tried anything else,

Do you have any other ATL sets that you can try with it? If all else fails, wait for the Legend processor to come, and try it with that.

aussie88 - It's funny you mentioned people with a TON of the 7406's.

In my entire career, I only encountered 2 such systems.

They were rare.

tryingmybest - Just junk it and move on up to the Legend....

The Merlin II is so limited in what it can do...

merlinman,
When I first walked into the office and saw the 7406's, I started thinking "what the hell? This is Definity, and I know nothing about Definity! They told me it was Merlin!" then I walked into the wiring closet expecting to find one of those HUGE Definity cabinets, and I found a Merlin II cabinet hanging on the wall, I was so confused, until I took a closer look at the manuals, and noticed the documentation on those strange cards. It was good idea. Outgrow the Merlin II, and march up to a Definity, without having to ditch the old sets.

Yeah, but you see, that just never happened, just like BRI never happended.

GOOD IDEAS, they just didn't fly, just like LANGLEY's air plane!

But busy buster, that's another story......(DON'T GET ME STATED !)

I upgraded to a Legend from an 820D2. And I miss the Busy Buster something fierce. I used that alot!
