Hi Everyone.

This is my first time !!.

Can any of you help with a recycle bin problem we are having. User's on our Domain (LAN) seem to have lost the facility of the Recycle Bin. When they delete anything it doesnt go into the bin.

I have checked the obvious option to bypass the bin and delete files etc imediately but of course it's not been altered as this is affecting everyone apart from Domain Admin's, like myself.

I have checked the group policy for the users but can't find anything to do with the recycle bin that might have been changed some how. Or am I missing something here.

Also I think this probleme started to happen when I installed 'WinUndelete' which would explain it perhaps, but HOW!!.

I have been in contact with the manufactures and they weren't much help to be honest and I can't remember what they said now anyway, it's been going on that long.

I really need to get this sorted for my users as it's a school and obviously the pupils and staff delete things by accident and want it back. The only way I can get it for them is either through there locally cached roaming user profile, or by using 'WinUndelete' which is a real pain in the ass.

Any help and advice would be very welcome indeed.

Thanks to all.

If you delete something from a network share it doesn't go into the recyclebin by design. I think the recycle bin is only for local files. In windows server 2003 you have a new feature called shadow copies which allows you to keep history of documents by saving them at a time you specify and not allowing them to be overwritten. To use this feature client must have the previous verions client installed.

Thanks for reply Jaydeebe, however I must tell you that it used to work with no problemes.

We are running 2000 Server not 2003 as well.

i confirm.. when you delete a file that is not on your local drive, its bye bye... it does not go in the recycle bin.

not on your pc, nor on the server where the file was...

If it was working before I would like to know how you did this because I would implement it straight away.

I know you're using 2000, i was just telling you how this problem can be got around with 2003.

In general the recycle bin is where local files goto when they are deleted by users and not if deleted from a network drives. If you somehow got this working many would be interested to know of the hack/workaround you used (I'm sure MS would then close the loophole with a subsequent patch....)

If you had this working - am curious to know why you installed Winundelete.... :)

In any case we use "undelete" v2 and replaced with V4 which works better. Similar to Windelete (novell's Salvage) in that files that users delete from their network drive go into the network recycle bin

the only problem we have is sometimes it eats up the entire drive even though it's set to autodelete salvaged files to always keep 20% of the hard drive free

getting back to your problem not sure what it might be, however when we encountered problems with Undelete it was either a permissions issue or we simply re-installed the software

Thanks for the help so far.

I havn't had much time to check the replies, so thanks again.

After reading them it looks as though you think I'm some sort of super hacker !! lol, yeah right.

Perhaps I should have written my request better.

What I meant was, I'm sure that when users who are logged onto their roaming user profile on a client machine delete a file, say a word document for example, it used to go into the recycle bin on their desktop where they could restore it if required.

Now when users accidentally delete a file it doesnt appear in the recycle bin on their desk top, and as I said, I'm sure this used to be the case, although judging by what some of you have said this is unique and would like to know how I did it !!!.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here or have I stumbled upon something that is deeper than I thought? - beats me.

Anyway, I think that since we installed undelete things changed in the recycle bin department hense the request for help.

Once agian perhaps I never noticed the fact that deleted files bypassed the bin, but the more I think about it I feel sure this used to be the case.

I know that as an administrator when I delete files they DO go into the recycle bin on my desktop - my question therefore is Why does this not happen to normal logged on users within the school.

Any thoughts anyone..

Where are the files located that your users are deleting? Are they on the users local drive(s), or are these files located on a network (i.e. server) drive?

Ironically I have had the opposite problem. My users when they delete items send thier deleted files to the recycle bin. I have limited space on the server and this has created a linear increase in the amount of data stored on the server. For those of you who wonder how Im doing this, I dont know exactly how to answer because it seems to be a side affect of my roaming profile setup. I have redirected the desktop, application data, and my documents to a server share designated for user files using Group Policies. It seems to work very well and we have had no significant problems over the past year it has been implimented. We are a small organization though with only about 40 users.

So I guess what I was wondering, not to hijack the link, but... does anyone know if there is a group policy involving the recycle bin? This actually may answer both sibaker and I's questions just configured differntly.
thanks
