Hi,
I have an Oracle 8.1.7 instance on a HP-ux server. I have had to restore the entire instance to another server in order to recover a table. However I cannot get the instance to start up on the new server. I have managed to start the listener however when trying a "startup nomount" in svrmgrl I receive and "End-of-file on communication channel". I've modified the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files to reflect the different node name of the server. What else might I be missing?
I only restored the /oracle directory and other directories holding the tablespace to the new server.

I'm only guessing but my guess work generally works for me.

Did you set the environment correctly?

ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, PATH, etc...

Did you restore the controlfile and system tablespace?

Is there any error in the alert log? [ponder]
