Well, I have an Exchange 2003 server that's currently being backed up by Legato using the latest Exchange 4.0 module. I just had a user come down and ask if I could retrieve a specific message for him that had been deleted. I went into the recovery section in legato but i can only go as far as restoring the entire mailbox store. I can't even get to the individual mailbox level, nevermind down to messages. Is that even possible with Legato? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks

Matt

Assuming you are backing up MSEXCH:MB, then go into Networker User for Exchange Server (in the Networker Group) and select the relevant mailbox.

I think that's an unlikely assumption. The mailbox backup option is slow and unwieldy due to the poor API provided by Micro$oft. Internally it involves exporting each mailbox to a PST file and backing that up - no wonder it's inefficient!

People who do mailbox backups tend to reserve this feature for a small number of important users (the board?).

Assuming you are not doing mailbox backups, you need to restore the whole store to another server and copy the required mailboxes or messages from there. It's horrible I know - blame BillyBoy.

Some companies have this process down to a fine art and can do it in minutes.

It is possible to restore an individual emails as long as one of the savesets being saved is MSEXCH:MB as TDun wrote.

I have done this with great success.

With Exchange 2003, you can use the Recovery Storage Group setup to recover the database where the user's mailbox resides, then use Exmerge to pull out the user's messages.
Info on the recovery storage group feature is on the MS Exchange sites.
