By mistake I deleted a folder from my USB Flash drive and the folder contained a lot of Word and Excel files that I need.
I use Windows XP and Office 2003.
Would appreciate if someone can advise any way I can recover these deleted files.

4144,

If you don't find what you need there, try this forum:
forum528

And when you post, specify what you have tried, and what results you've gotten from each attempt.

There are multiple data recovery programs out there - some paid, some free. Won't hurt to give different ones a try.

Here's a free one I've used with success on occasion:

I've also used this, or at least the similar Active Partition Recovery (not free, but I think you can try it before buying to see if it will work):

And there are others. One that gets mentioned very frequently, but I can't seem to remember the name of it again. You should also try searching the forums, b/c MANY alternatives have been mentioned right here on tek-tips.

Also, if these files are valuable enough, you might want to consider a data recovery service - also mentioned in the forums.

Have you tried this?

Have fun.

[lol] Nice one!

I recently had a similar probelm: I accidentally erased the entire chip of my digital camera instead of deleting only a few selected pics.

I could restore all pics with this:

Simple, effective, freeware.
:)

Hmm, I wish I'd of found that one about 4 months ago, when I had accidentally deleted all the pictures off our camera card... but I used the camera's format utility on that one, and read it was impossible to recover such. I did try about 10 different apps - free, trial-to-pay, anything I could get my hands on... or maybe touchpad/mouse on? [wink]

I'll have to take a look at that one just to see. Being it's freeware, wouldn't hurt to keep handy.

Tried Undelete but it is not FREE or am I missing something?

This might not help many people, but I have Compact Flash, SD, and micro-SD cards by SanDisk and each one has come with a mini-CD containing their recovery software, complete with a license key. I don't have a flash drive by them, but I'd guess that they'd include the software, too.

I've thankfully only had to use it once and it worked great.

I've also given a couple away since I only need one copy of the software.

Like I said, that might not help many folks, but I figured I'd offer it as an FYI.

You must be missing something. I downloaded it and it was free.
Perhaps this new version called "FileRestore" isn't free anymore. [ponder]

You'll find the previous version called "UndeletePlus" here:

It IS free.

It is only free to scan for deleted files. When you try to recover these files it asks you to register and pay $29.95 for 1 yr

However, makeitso's second posting link (to UndeletePlus) gets you the previous free version.

I just tried it on a USB drive with known deleted files.

It works very well.

Thanks MIS! It works so well, I think that gets you a star.

Thanks, fumei.

Sorry for the confusion, 4144. I didn't know the latest version required licensing.
The old version does the job fine though - without any fine.

Well, it does have some limitations. I did a bit of testing last night. It does NOT work all that well with PSD (Photoshop) files. The larger they were (are?), the less it does the undelete. Also, it seems that if there is any disk I/O the failure rate goes up. Also if you try to restore to a different drive.

I/O + different drive makes the successful restore rate go down to...0%. Even though, UndeletePlus states it was successful, the files are there in the correct file size, Windows Explorer shows the correct icon for the files, but something is corrupted and Photoshop will not open ANY of them.
