I backed up some data using MSBackup (XP) and the file was too big for the CDRW that I used and so the process did not complete. However, the backup file is on the CD and it will let me go through the restore process - as far as locating the file I wish to restore - I can sellect the file to restore (a .pst file) it appears to be there and is the correct size etc - BUT I get an "the backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used" error message - no doubt due to the fact that the backup did not complete. Is there any way of recovering this file?? Thanks.

Has the CDRW closed the session?
AS I understand the file was correct in size, however, larger than the cappacity of the CD media? Clarify?
Is there an open session of the CDRW?

Whick OS are you using? [MSBackup is different on different OSes].

Hi Klon

I was backing up my entire "My Documents" directory and subdirectories - the entire folder was bigger than the space on the CDRW and that is why the Backup did not complete correctly. However the file I need to restore is only one of thousands - and it appears to be on the backup CDRW - I say this as, when I go through the restore procedure, I can see the one file I need to restore and can confirm its file size etc etc. It is just that the usual MSBackup "Restore" procedure will not run as the original backup (of the entire directory) was not completed. The OS is Windows XP.

I am not sure what you mean by "Is there an open session of the CDRW?"

Thanks for your help

Chris
