A guy here at work (no, it isn't me) lost his hard drive earlier this week. We tried slaving it and using the secondary IDE, but it couldn't be recognized. Guess what, he never backed up his data. Can you imagine that?

We've already got him up and running with a new drive, but he's pretty upset because he lost so many important and useful files. Are there any utilities out there that we can try to rescue the drive? A senior manager lost a drive a few months back (without backing up) and the company wouldn't pay to have her drive professionally recovered, so this guy is SOL unless there is something free/cheap we can use.

You said earlier in your post when the drive was attached to the secondary ide channel that it wasn't recongnized. If it was you may of had a chance with some data recovery software but chances are like you said he is sol.

Well, as mentioned in a few other threads: when talking about recovering data you need GetDataBack ( The trial version doesn't allow you to recover, only to view what you can recover (so you don't buy (69$-79$) it if it doesn't fit your needs.
It also works when Windows doesn't recognise the disk. But I really doubt if it cannot be detected during bootup though.

Peace,

if the machanics of the drive are goosed then his has been cooked

The idea scenario is to use the same pc the drive came out of. If it was a boot drive, you'll have no choice but to slave it. In either case, slave the drive, and try this program:

I've had good luck with this in the past, maybe it'll help you too.

Good luck!

GetDataBack worked like a charm. I'm owed a lunch and I owe you a thanks.

You're welcome - I'm glad you're not disappointed with GetDataBack as well.

Peace,

Yellow
