Hi,
I am trying to show that if a weekly backup fails, I can still recover a database from the backup from the previous week, and roll forward using the archive logs. Only problem is, it won't work.
I have deleted a test database, restored from last monday's cold backup, now I need to apply the archive logs from monday 7th to date. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

Mike, in what way is it failing (errors etc)?

All I ask of you
Is make my wildest dreams come true

Thanks for the quick answer. It does not *fail* - it says "Media recovery complete", and the database is consistent, as it was on Monday 7th.

You may need either the latest controlfile or issue a 'recover database using backup controlfile'.

I think what you mean is that I should have kept the control files, restored the data files then issued the recover command. Then the system would know the correct SCN, and recover up to that. Is that right?

Yes.

And/Or try:
RECOVER [UNTIL...] USING BACKUP CONTROL FILE;

Thanks - I'm trying that.But I'm not sure how 'recover .... using backup control file' works. Do I need to specify where the backup control file is? Is this a control file saved in a different location? Thanks for all your help.

No, it indicates that the controlfile it finds is not the current controlfile.

Thanks - that's all clear. What would we do without tek-tips. Thanks to Ken too.
