A client had a system crash. Wouldn't boot up. System restore didn't work either. Client then choose recovery which put it back to day one. Question is: Are any files recoverable using recovery software, or is it all truely gone, since the partitions were deleted and restored.

If the drive was Boot 'n' Nuke'd, then probably the data's no longer recoverable. But without that sort of disk clean there is a chance some data might still be lifted off the drive. Difficult to say for sure...

Good luck - left us know how it goes if you try.

Are any files recoverable using recovery software

I remember my only experience with data recovery (touch wood) was 4-5 years ago and I used a program called R-Studio Undelete I believe. I found virtually all the files I needed, even some old JPEGs from many years (and a few re-installs) prior. GetDataBack also is highly regarded in this forum and has well-documented success.

If all the client did was reinstall the OS the chances are good that you can recover some or all of the old files...but s/he will have to stop using the drive NOW if you plan to do a recovery. The OS is usually installed in the same relative place on the disk but every further application installation increases the chance of overwriting data permanently.

As long as drive wasn't overwritten with binary zeros, something like getdataback will recover everything that's not been overwritten by the new install. As Tony says - stop using it immediately to improve recovery.

Thanks for the suggestions on Getdataback. I downloaded the trial copy and ran it. It showed that most of it was recoverable. So I registered it and got most everything recovered. A very nice piece of software. A great addition to my tool box.
