recover deleted and compacted emails

is there anyway to recover emails from a folder that has had the emails deleted, and then compacted? If not compacted I know I could use dbextract or some tool to get them out, but it's been compacted so the file size has shrunk to next to nill. Would a data recovery program find the rest of the file and put it back together again, or is that just simply not possible because the file is still in tact it's just been 'resized' so to speak.

I havent been able to replicate the condition you have listed so I am not sure whether this will work but it might be worth giving it a go. Select the Deleted Items folder on Outlook and then go to Tools and select Recover Deleted Items

I can't believe I didn't mention it was outlook express. sorry. But those are cool tips for outlook I didn't know about it.
