recover cd-rom drive?

can someone refresh my memory, it's been so long since i had to do this...

a friend's windows 2000 machine won't recognize the cd-r drive. she says she had virus/spyware problems and tried cleaning them off, and the cd-rom drive is now missing. i've had her run a new hardware scan and nothing came that way, and i'm assuming that her IDE and power cable are attached and working properly.

How do i recover the cd-rw in windows?

any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure the drive is functional? (eg, can you boot from it). Is it missing from everywhere? (ie, not in device manager, not in disk management, not in explorer) - thinking it might just have lost its drive letter (run diskmgmt.msc to assign one if this is the case)

on the second reboot, the problem cleared itself up. gotta love ME. thanks for the reply, though.
