Does anybody know of a way to log when a the login script has been modified and by who?

Assuming that you have Novell 4.11 or greater, you can use auditing services & Auditcon to track file modifications, creations & deletions on the SYS volume. It won't tell which lines are changed, but everything else about it. Review the options carefully when setting up auditing so that your system doesn't try to track too much.

The company I work for just installed "SECURCON" on all of our 4.11 servers. ANything we do through NWAdmin, or at the console of the server, securcon tracks the user (user login id) from start to finish and maintains an audit trail. <br>

The other item that may be of use, is to have your manager in force a changelog policy so that changes must be approved before they are done. In my case, myself and the other two network engineers submit changelogs for work to be done on the servers, the manager approves it and re-distributes the approved log to everyone on the team. If there are any comments or issues, a specific person on the team can reply. Once all items of concern are taken care of, the work can be done. Our final step is a printout of the server configuration or printout of the container login script which is submitted to the manager and placed into a folder. With recent copies.<br>

This seems to work out fairly well for us considering that we have 20 Novell 4.x and 5.x servers and 3 engineers.<br>

It also helps with team building, I like this process and there is a security blanket there in case I miss something or overlooked an issue that needs to be addressed prior to the change that may occur.<br>
