Recording Cable 1

Hi, I need to make a cable that will allow me to record a telephone call..

would it be possible to make a cable with rj11 pins 1+5 to a 3.5mm jack, insert that into a audio recorder with auto start.. so when a call is incoming, and the recorder senses data, it begins to record..

is this possible.. ??

Before going too much further, please check the laws, for your area, that govern recording telephone calls. If you are located in the US, laws vary widely from state-to-state.

How you would go about connecting a device to record calls depends on the set-up. For example,
are you trying to record from a standard POTs line or an extension off of a digital key system/PBX?

Hi, Thanks for the reply, its just a standard analogue POTS line. It is in the UK, and i have our admin looking into the legalities of it..

Here in the U.S., several companies sell a device that will do this. Try Radio Shack or MCMelectronics.

Not the way you are trying to do it. Due to voltage and impedance mismatches you can't simply run a phone pair into a recorder and get decent audio. For auto start/stop you need to detect the on-hook and off-hook voltages and fire a relay.
