Hi,

Id like to be able to add a record into dns
so that anything at mydomain.co.uk replies on
one single ip address.

IE: website1.mydomain.co.uk website2.mydomain.co.uk
all reply on a single ip address without the need
for a dns entry for each.

When we didnt use to host websites ourselves
and the ISP used host headers they added a entry
with the name of a * for the domain and then
no matter what i pinged at mydomain.co.uk
eg: fdsjlkfsdjkl.mydomain.co.uk it replied on this ip
addy specified in the * record.

Im trying to add the * record to windows 2000 dns server
and it wont let the type * in the box, maybe it thinks
its an invalid character.

I know its possiable because my webhost added a *
record on their 2000 servers and windows server 2003
lets you add a * record easily (or so a friends tells me).

Comments and suggestions apprechiated.
Thanks

Robert

Hi ,

First of all you have to create A Record at DNS and then you have to create pointer and point the record to the Alias Recorded with the other name.

If that not clear post a massage

Regards

Sorry i dont follow.

I created a record with no name and gave it the ip.
So it says (same as parent folder).
Now pinging mydomain.co.uk replies as well, but it
doesnt reply to anythingifancyputting.mydomain.co.uk

I created an alias called * that points to the
(same as parent folder) record, is that right?
but it doesnt work.

Comments Apprechiated..

You have to create two host records first for website1.mydomain.co.uk and the other is website2.mydomain.co.uk but you have to make sure PTR should checked .

ahh, i dont think you follow what i want to do.

I want to get away from adding a entry for each
website because i use host headers and a shared ip.

On a Windows Server 2003 (and certainly on 2000 somehow)
you can create a single dns entry called * that causes
the dns server to reply with the same IP no matter
what i ping at mydomain.co.uk

with the * record if i ping lalala.mydomain.co.uk
it will resolve that to *.*.*.* or whatever my IP is.

I cant get 2000 server to allow me to type a record
called *

Dont worry everyone ive done it myself.
I thought of something i cant belive i didnt
think of before.

I just opened the DNS zonefile in notepad
and added the * record in there and then
restarted dns.

Thanks Anyway
