Well, I've got an Athlon XP 2000+, and it seems to be running pretty hot (for my standards), I was wondering what if any are the recommended temperatures for the cpu. It runs (idle) 43C, and under Load anywhere from 49C - 52C (eek!) I've got a coolermaster copper heatsink with heatpipe technology (rated up to 1.8ghz, but I've seen it on more, but my cpu is 1.66ghz, so it should be welllll enough), and arctic silver 3 thermal grease.

I've 2 80mm intakes and 1 outtake fan, and it just seems to be running warm, wondering any tips as well for cooling my system for a budget that is nonexistant.

I have ax XP 2100+ slightly underclocked and a generic aluminum heatsink and fan and simple white thermal grease. it runs about the same temp as yours.

I havea new Asus A7N8X mobo that will shutdown the power if the CPU is too hot so I assume the temp is ok from that point of view.

your heatsink is rated about middle of the road in performance on review pages I have come across.

I am waiting for newegg to have more Thermalright SLK 800 copper heatsinks (about 40$) . I would think you could take the fan off your current one and put it on an SLK 800.

Absolutely no need to change anything!!
These are perfectly NORMAL temperatures for an XP2.0+, infact I would go as far as to say they are good!
The Coolermaster Heatpipe is well up to the job, don't change it!
Xp's don't start going flakey untill the hit the mid 60's, AMD actual say the maximum sustained running temperature for an XP is 70C, SO YOU JUST DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM.
Sure a thermalright SLK800 may take your temps down
3-4degrees, which would be nice but absolutely not necessary, the only If in all of this would be "if" you intended to overclock? and the extra cooling would give you a bit more headroom. Martin

Yeah, I might just be a freak of nature here... but I have overclocked my 1700+ to about a 2050+ and my temperature is under 50 at load. Its set to shut off at 60, but has never even gotten close.

Almost all motherboards are shipping with some sort of theraml protection in the bios. Just have to find it..depends on who makes your bios. Phoenix and the newer AMI bios's settings are pretty close.

I must own a freak of nature..AMD XP1700 clocked up as recognized XP2000 bumps 35C after I've been gaming for 2-3 hrs. Cold temp, freshly booted around 30C. When gaming my chasis temp climbs to 40C-45C. Could be the 8 fans in the case, but still.

PSYSMIC!
Think about it?
It is physically impossible for an air cooled CPU to be cooler that the air surrounding it! even if the machine was turned off, if the case air was 40-45C then so would the CPU be 40-45C.
Your freak of nature just isn't reading the freakin temperatures correctly, sorry! and your actual CPU temps are likely to be at least 10-15C over your case air temp.

you may want to look in to a cpu over clocking fan kit for your computer (even though your not over clocked it still runs cooler) or you can look into a water cooling kit for your system.
