I have 768mb sdram on my machine. I used to have a 5.5 gig partition for my Windows XP Pro. When I purchased a new hard drive, the new partition for my Windows XP Pro is now 15 gig. I noticed that my computer slowed down. It would take 30 secs for an application to be invoked. After doing all optimizations that I know, I tried to remove the virtual memory but an error prompt displayed when I invoked Photoshop 7.0 stating that virtual memory should be "min 100mb max 959mb" for Photoshop to run without runtime errors.

My new custom setting, as Photoshop suggested, improved the performance of my machine big time. Now my question is this: Is my setting the most efficient setting. What are your recommendations? Thanks.

For RAM < 1 gb., the general rule is 1.5 x RAM.
But see the discussion, including utilities, to make this more exact.

The best thing you can do is to either move the pagefile to another partition (questionable in terms of benefits), or even better, to another hard disk drive.
See the notes linked above.

This is a good read.

If you have your System Properties/ Advanced/ Performance/ Settings, and the "Adjust for best performance" checked: and on the Advanced tab "Processor scheduling" and "Memory usage" checked for Programs, this sets the paging file size (Custom Size) Initial size 768mb and Maximum size 1536mb.

These amounts remain identical for RAM totals 512mb - 1gb.
