Can somebody please recommend a suitable 16 port Gb switch to use in a small 1 server(SBS 2k3), 12 workstation env.

I am considering the PowerConnect 2716 16-Port due to price point and that it can be setup as a managed switch (web manage) - I manage this site remotely.

From the server's (local) NIC the existing dgs-105 feeds a dgs-108 one floor up. (dlink Gb switches)

Due to rapid (and unforeseen) expansion downstairs I need to replace the dgs-105.

Thanks

My contribution to your question would be to re-think the 16-port vs. more for future use. If you're using 12 now then 16 might not be that far away, you might owe it to your client to consider a larger switch. When I converted to GB two years ago...I was sure 8 ports would be enough, as most clients were wireless. Well, two network printers and another WAP later we're full up, I wished I had listened to advice to get a 16-port switch.

The cost is even closer today. As for brand, you'll have to look elsewhere as I haven't revisited this hardware recently. Good luck with your decision.

I agree with wahnula. Since you have experienced growth, grow your capacity beyond 16 GB to at least 24. The price is reasonable and you will have room to grow.

As for brand, I think Dell is ok so long as you get the warranty with it. The 24x7x4 is well worth it.

Thanks all for the replies.

Adding the 16 port downstairs is actually going to leave me with 8 spare ports down there and adding more than 2 or 3 LAN drops down there is highly unlikely.
The (old) 5 port will move upstairs to be daisy-chained with the existing 8 port to give me 10 available ports up there.
Any more expansion will probably occur upstairs - at which time I'll probably think seriously about that 24 port for up there. :^)

Cheers :)
