I am researching products for implimenting an enterprise wide DNS solution.
Can anyone recomend a product? or make a comment on any of the following.
Lucent QIP?
Check Pont Meta IP?
Cisco CNS Network Registrar?
Nortel NetID?
Win2k?
Bind?
I know this is a late reply, so I hope this info is helpful. I am familiar with the QIP product. This product runs on a Sybase (provided) or Oracle database, on WindowsNT4sp6a/W2Ksp3, Solaris.2x, HPUX 11.x, AIX 4.3 operating systems which can be mixed. All network IPs are defined and stored into the database/Enterprise server. Then Remote Servers are deployed in remote locations that communicate with the Enterprise server. The Remote Servers are provided DNS and/or DHCP customized configuration and policy information which is extracted from the database. Once the initial configuration and customizations are complete, this setup will pretty much run itself.
I suggest that if you manage over 1,500 IP objects\devices, that you highly consider this product. If you are under 1,500, then honestly, Microsoft's free services would suffice.
And just to note, BIND\DNS is just service. It is not a management tool by any means. If you lose DNS data via a disk crash or some other method, recovery time is minimal when using the QIP product. Also, QIP Enterprise server data backups are a breeze.
Let me know if you are still considering or have more questions about Lucent Technologies' VitalQIP product line.
