Please help!
I have a small wireless network setup with 5 Machines running XP 1 with ME and 1 98
One of the XP Machines with a ubs wireless adapter will not connect to the internet because it recives a 169.x.x.x address. but it shows that i am in the newtork but i can only see 2 computer on the network
I cannot ping the router, if I assign a static IP it will ping the router but it still will not surf the web and still only a few computer can be see on the network
I have
1. made sure that the network key is the same on the adapter and the router
2. updated the drives
3. installed a new wireless adpater
4. moving the pc closer to the router
5. unplugging the wireless and plugging the ethernet cable into the nic
6. released the ip
7. renew the ip (i get a error message that media is disconnected) in both cases wireless and ehernet cables
8. disabled the windows firewall and the XP firewall
Please help
thanks mike

you need to make sure that the appropriate protocols are install in order to be able to view the network (ie. netbeui) and make sure that all the pc's are the same workgroup. i would first re-install the usb adapter's driver, and make sure that the device is not plugged in when you do so. As well make sure that your router is up and running before you turn on the pc. this may all sound real basic, but there are only so many reasons for a 169 ip first and formost being that the router was not ready yet, second a bad driver.

Sorry, don't mean to be picky, but you do mean a usb adapter, correct? Is the machine in question pro or home edition. The home edition doesn't like networking. Bought a xp home laptop, but a card in it, wouldn't connect to the internet. Took the card out, put it in a w2k pro machine, worked every time. Just a thought. Good luck.

to geln...there are usb to wire less adapters out there but i don't know how the mac id is set on them ..too new for me

Glen... i believe you are speaking of a pcmia card...the drivers for those are tricky..with only a few chipset oems and mega board oems....windows recognized the chipset rather than the actual board and this is the root of one of the biggest pains i have..the driver database of win2k is diff than xp home and this is probably why you had the prob with that card...

All Needed protocols are installed. The router is ready there are 7 other users that have no problems reciving a IP address.
No I am not using a pcmia card, only a linksys wireless usb adapter. I replaced that with a Cisco Wireless adapter and i still had the same problems

This issue has shown up on Bugtraq as well. It seems they are getting a number of reports of this happening. It also would seem that this is also effecting win2k as well.

A culprit has not been identified as of yet. I will keep this thread up to date as I learn more about it.

A 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address is used by default if a valid IP address cannot be achieved. Possible causes:
• You port needs reconfiguration
• You could have a faulty Ethernet cable.
• The drivers for your Ethernet card may need to be reinstalled.

You wouldn't per chance have McAfee VirusScan and the XP is a laptop? If so, try disabling McAfee.

Yes it does have McAfee, I disabled the firewall, Ill try the virus scan. Its a desktop PC
Thanks

The Dell laptop that was having this problem went to a D-Link, but still suffered the above. Dell told him to UNINSTALL McAfee altogether. He did, it worked!
But no reason given for the 'uninstall'. ??!!
