I have a system which is giving an error on opening Outlook 97:

The Add-in "C:\Program Files\Network Associates\McAfee VirusScan\emalsca..." could not be installed or loaded. Unable to load "C:\Program Files\Network Associates\McAf...". You may be out of memory, out of system resources, or missing a .dll file.

The OS is Windows 95. Office 97 is installed with Outlook 98 accessing an MS Exchange server. The virusscan (v4.5.1) is maintained via EPolicy. 128MB of Ram and a claim of 75% free resources lead me to believe it's either a missing .dll file or something else.

Any ideas? This user is getting upset with this error, and I'm getting frustrated looking for a solution. Our McAfee sales person got us in touch with a tech a couple of months ago who was unable to help.

Try this from NAI knowledge base

Problem Description:
VirusScan e-mail scan component enabled

Error opening Microsoft Outlook

Error: ·Scanemal.dll could not be loaded·.

Scanemal.dll could not be loaded on a system with non compliant mapi32.dll

Problem Environment:
Mcafee VirusScan 4.5

Microsoft Windows 9x

Microsoft Windows NT

Microsoft Windows 2000

Microsoft Outlook

Cause of this problem:
Scanmal.dll brings the export table from Mapi32.dll. When scanemal.dll makes an open MAPI call to that dll file, if the mapi32.dll present is non Microsoft compliant, it fails to cooperate.

Solution:
Reinstall Outlook
Bring a fresh copy of mapi32.dll from another machine that has the same version of Outlook installed.
The linker version of the Mapi32.dll for Outlook 2000 needs to be 5.00

Make sure the user and the system account have the proper rights to Scanemal.dll (it is a hidden file). It is located under Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan.

Edit the registry to direct Outlook to the appropriate VirusScan directory. These registry keys can be located at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions, and also at:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Components\7F6F7B6C2AC7B1746BA858118F8863A9

Also look up these in the NAI Kb
