I defrag my C drive about once a month. It used to complete - no issues.

Now it completes but says
"some files on this volume could not be defragmented"
"Please check the defragmentation report for a list of these file"

But there is nothing in the list - this is the report

Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented
None

So I searched the internet & this site. This is what I have tried so far, to no avail.

Defragged in safe mode - no change.
Scheduled a chkdsk at re-boot - no errors found
Quit the AVG control centre in case its antivirus related activity - defragged again - no change
Done a full virus scan - no problems reported.

So I started thinking what may have changed since I last did a defrag?

I've installed Nokia Data suite
I've installed a bluetooth dongle
Microsoft update did it's thing on update Tuesday

I realise it's no big deal having a few fragmented files on drive C - But as it used to defrag 100% no issues - this has got me curious.

So I'm wondering - has anyone else come across this recently and if so have they found a solution that doesn't involve buying a third party defrag tool?

I have been known to be wrong.

I think it's your MFT, your MFT can't be defragged online. Some commercial defraggers can defrag your MFT, like O&O powerdefrag or Speeddisk etc etc. As far as I know, there ere no free tools to defrag the MFT

I don't believe it's the MFT as that is in only 3 chunks - not an issue I would have thought.

However the File fragmentation is claiming 1 file with 378 fragments. I guess it could be restore point?

Try diskkeeper - it will even defrag when the disk is in use and it does a far better job than windows defrag.
